Gray plank-look porcelain gives the look of weathered boards without the maintenance. The long planks run down the hallway and into the kitchen, so the rooms read as a single floor and the eye is pulled along the length of the space.

What to look at

Long planks bow slightly, so they are not stacked in neat thirds. A smaller offset avoids the high corners that show up when the middle of one plank meets the end of the next. The floor was flattened first, and the tile is set with fully covered thinset so the plank ends do not rock. The edges meet the cabinet toe-kicks and the door casings with a tight, even gap.

How work like this is set

Plank-look tile is long and slightly bowed, so the pieces are staggered by a third or less, never half, to avoid high corners. The floor is leveled first, each plank is back-buttered and the joints are kept narrow and consistent so the run looks like board flooring from a few feet away.

If you want something similar

A floor job starts with what is under it. Slab moisture, cracks, dips and old adhesive all affect how the new tile should be set. Send us the room, the approximate size and the tile you have in mind and we will tell you what prep it needs. We work in Long Beach and nearby, and the matching service is Residential Tile Installation.
