Close view of an eight-point compass medallion framed by a brown ring

A compass-rose medallion is set into the center of an entry floor, framed by a brown ring and surrounded by a white veined field. The star's points are tan and cream, with fine brown edges, and the medallion lines up with the front door and the stairs.

What to look at

A medallion only works if it is centered on something real. Here it is centered on the line from the door and square to the stairs. The field around it was cut to the circle with a tight, even gap that is the same all the way around. The medallion pieces sit in the same plane as the field, with no lip, so a shoe or a vacuum glides over the edge.

How work like this is set

Pattern floors are set from the center of the space out, not from a wall. A line is snapped from a fixed point such as the door or the stair, the pattern is laid out dry, and borders or medallions are located before any thinset is mixed. Cuts at the walls then come out even on both sides.

A floor job starts with what is under it. Slab moisture, cracks, dips and old adhesive all affect how the new tile should be set.
