Black-and-White Hex Runner Floor

A narrow runner of white hexagon mosaic with black flower motifs and a black border is set into a veined porcelain bathroom floor. It reads like a rug made of tile, and it is the one detail in the room that looks like a tile floor from the 1930s.
What to look at
A runner is set into a cut-out in the large tiles, so the border meets the field with a straight, tight edge on all four sides. The mosaic sheets are matched so the flowers repeat evenly and the black border runs unbroken. The runner is centered between the walls and the door. Because mosaic and large-format sit at different thicknesses, thinset depth is adjusted so the surfaces finish in the same plane.
How work like this is set
Pattern floors are set from the center of the space out, not from a wall. A line is snapped from a fixed point such as the door or the stair, the pattern is laid out dry, and borders or medallions are located before any thinset is mixed. Cuts at the walls then come out even on both sides.
If you want something similar
A floor job starts with what is under it. Slab moisture, cracks, dips and old adhesive all affect how the new tile should be set. Send us the room, the approximate size and the tile you have in mind and we will tell you what prep it needs. We work in Long Beach and nearby, and the matching service is Residential Tile Installation.
