This tub-and-shower alcove is wrapped in a small square mosaic that mixes cream, beige and tan. The same tile runs up all three walls, into the window opening and across the sill, so the room reads as one surface instead of walls with a window cut out of them.

What to look at

Look at the window. Mosaic leaves almost no room to hide a bad layout, so the grid has to arrive at the sill, the jamb and the ceiling line without slivers. The joints run straight through the corners and the shower valve sits on a full tile rather than a cut one. The colour shifts from sheet to sheet are part of the tile, not a mistake in the mix. Where the mosaic meets the tub the last row sits just above the lip with a flexible joint.

How work like this is set

Mosaic tile is set on sheets, so the work is in the details between sheets. Each sheet is aligned so the joints continue unbroken across the seam, and the sheets are beaten in with a block so the surface is flat. On shower floors the mortar bed is sloped to the drain first, and the waterproofing goes down before the mosaic.

If you want something similar

If you are planning a bathroom like this, the tile is only part of the job. The walls, the tub or pan, the waterproofing and the substrate decide how long it lasts, so those are the questions to settle first. Send photos of the room and we will tell you what we see. We work in Lakewood and nearby, and the matching service is Bathroom & Shower Tile.
