These three photos show a shower rebuild in order. First the bathroom is opened down to the studs. Then the walls are covered in cement board and a bright waterproofing membrane. Finally the white ceramic tile goes up in a running bond, row by row.

What to look at

The stud photo is the most important one. It shows why the work starts with framing: the studs are checked for plumb, blocking is added where fixtures will mount and the pan is slope-formed before anything is tiled. The red layer is the waterproofing, which is painted on and flood tested. The tile only goes on after that. A shower that looks good on day one but was not built this way tends to fail behind the tile.

How work like this is set

Large-format wall tile is set differently from small tile. The wall is flattened first, thinset is applied to both the wall and the back of the tile, and leveling clips keep the faces in one plane. Movement joints are left at the inside corners and at the change of plane at the floor and ceiling, then filled with matching sealant rather than rigid grout.

If you want something similar

A shower is waterproofing first and tile second. Whatever tile you pick, the pan slope, the membrane and the flood test come before it goes on. If you want a similar shower, tell us the size of the alcove and whether there is a window, a bench or a niche, and we will plan around it. We work in Downey and nearby, and the matching service is Tile Removal & Floor Prep.
